Donald McCain Jnr

Welcome to the Donald McCain Jnr website. Racehorse trainer Donald started training in 2006 at Bankhouse, taking over from his father, the legendary 'Ginger' McCain. Set in the heart of rural Cheshire, Bankhouse has stabling for more than 100 horses, superb private grass and all-weather gallops, first class schooling facilities and enjoys a quiet and peaceful setting - perfect for training racehorses.

  • In only five seasons training Donald has been responsible for in excess of 400 winners. With his first century in only his fifth season and the number of winners increasing year on year.
  • Cheltenham Festival winners have been plentiful with Cloudy Lane, Whiteoak, Peddlers Cross and Ballabriggs.
  • Donald won the Aintree Grand National in 2011 with Ballabriggs.
  • Great wins have also come on the flat with Overturn not only winning the Northumberland Plate but also the prestigious Chester Cup.
  • 2009-2010 a massive festival double was landed by the unbeaten Peddlers Cross who was, as a result recognised as the Champion Novice Hurdler jointly with Menorah at the Anglo-Irish Jump Racing Awards.
  • Donalds handling of Overturn has made him into probably the best dual purpose horse in training having netted not just the Scottish Champion Hurdle, The Northumberland Plate, The Galway Hurdle, The Chester Cup, The Ascot Hurdle and most recently The Fighting Fifth.
  • In 2010-2011, not only did Donald gain his first century in a season but also his first Grand National with Ballabriggs, listed winners courtesy of Alegralil and Any Given Day and not only a winner of the Fighting Fifth but also a gallant second in the Champion Hurdle courtesy of Peddlers Cross.
  • 2011-2012 has started well and already includes proof of Donald's versatility as a trainer with Overturn's fine victory in the Chester Cup and having been recently voted 'The National Hunt trainer of the Year' by the Horserace Writers and Photographers Association.

Donald sealed his victory as Bangor on Dee's Top trainer with a treble today, giving him a total of 27 winners for the season at his local track. First up was Orlittlebylittle in the colours of Deva Racing. Deva Racing are great supporters of the yard and most of the members are fairly local so a winner virtually on the banks of the River Dee was extra special for them. Golden Call then made all to win the Novices' Chase in a fairly emphatic style whilst having only his first run over fences since pointing in Ireland. Many congratulations to his owner Mike Allen. Finally last but definately not least Absinthe made up the treble and in doing so won his third race on the bounce for owners Mr and Mrs Paul Rooney. Many congratulations to all connections.

It's quite disconcerting going from 153 winners one day to zero the next! However, the winners got underway at Sedgefield today when Grouse Lodge won today under Henry Brooke. That's 1 in the bag and only 153 to go! This was Grouse Lodge's second win since joining us and he looks to have a great future. Congratulations to his owner Frank McAleavy.

What a season it has been with not only an incredible 153 winners but also two winners at the Cheltenham Festival and one at Aintree. There has been a Chester Cup on the flat and races such as the Charlie Hall Chase, The Coral Ascot Hurdle, The Fighting Fifth and others too numerous to mention. Numerous potential stars have emerged and some very obvious ones such as Cinders and Ashes, Hollow Tree and Super Duty. The old boys have done brilliantly again with Cloudy Lane winning the Fox Hunters and Ballabriggs running a great race in The National. Overturn has established himself as 'The Best Dual Purpose Horse' in training but could he be the best 'Tri Purpose Horse' by the end of 2012/13?

This season's incredible results have been made possible by the 'Great Team' we have here at Bankhouse. Thanks to all the boys and girls in the yard who have worked hard through the long winter and have stuck together, worked as a team and nursed and cared for their horses all year. It couldn't have been done without you. A special mention must be made of 'Sinbad's bottom' which we are thinking of insuring as it has been responsible for Cinders and Ashes, Son of Flicka and Cloudy Lane!

Not only have both Donald and Jason finished third in their respective tables but Henry was awarded Champion Conditional Jockey.

Obviously there have been very low times with the loss of Dad, we can only hope that he is looking down on us all and that we can continue to make him proud.

There are exciting times ahead and Donald has been planning the new campaign for several weeks now.

Lastly may we thak you all for your kindness and support through the ups and downs of the past season and heres looking towards the new one and hopefully we can continue on that upward curve.

Thank you all.

27th December 2011

Tuesday was a funny day of highs and lows. Obviously we were very disappointed to see Peddlers Cross beaten at Kempton. Most importantly he has come home fine and in one piece. Although in hindsight we think we have beaten by a very good horse, we still don't think that was the 'true' Peddlers' yesterday. Hopefully we will get to the bottom of it.

On a far brighter note Hollow Tree won his first Grade 1 at Chepstow putting himself firmly into the Triumph Hurdle picture, particularly if the ground is soft. Timmy Murphy said that he was the bravest three year old he has ridden and would be even better next year. Whilst Hollow Tree was bringing home the spoils at Chepstow, Empress Orchid did the business up north at Wetherby ridden by Henry Brooke.

Many congratulations to yesterday's victorious owners, Messrs Brannon, Dennis, Dick and Holden and Bill Bromley and Mrs King, we hope you enjoyed your Christmas winners!

26th December 2011
Boxing Day brought us one winner in the shape of Our Mick at Kempton. He won really well ridden by Jason and looks to have a very bright future. Congratulations to Keith and Edna Benson who sadly had to listen to the race on the back of a breakdown truck!

22nd December 2011

A great days racing at Sedgefield saw us reach the milestone of 80 winners before the Christmas break. Today's winner was The Weatherman who won very nicely under Jason and congratulations go to his owner's the Clywdian Connections. With a couple of very close seconds courtesy of Charminster and Realignment, we are all looking forward to racing resuming on Boxing day.

Tonight is the Staff Christmas Party and no doubt there will be some sore heads in the morning, however, every member of staff is an integral part of the team here at Bankhouse and contribute to the continued success of the yard. It is fair to say they all deserve to have a good night and enjoy themselves regardless of how much it might hurt in the morning!

19th December 2011
The 80 winner mark is getting tantalisingly close after a double at Bangor today. The first winner was King's Grace who made all to win under Jason and confirmed the promise he had shown prior to a disappointing run last time. The last winner of the day was Howaboutnow having his first run, again virtually making all and showing plenty of promise whilst following in his full brother's footsteps by winning first time out at Bangor! Well done to the winning owners, Tim Leslie and Messrs Brannon, Dick, Hernon and Holden.

Henry rode a double on the day and heads the conditional jockey's table and Callum Whillans who is also attached to the yard got his name on the score sheet too. As a result half the winners today at Newcastle were ridden by 'McCain jockeys'!

13th December 2011
On a bleak day at Catterick, Bourne put his best foot forward and won first time out over hurdles. Ridden by Jason he looks an exciting recruit to hurdles and should bring his owners 'The Timeform Betfair Racing Club' some fun through the winter. Congratulations to all.

9th December 2011
Ebanour responded well in first time blinkers today at Doncaster winning his first race over hurdles. He was ridden by Jason Maguire and is owned by Tim Leslie. Congratulations to all.

7th December 2011
Racing defied the elements at Hexham today and despite the nearly gale force winds and bitter temperatures Edge of Town won the novice handicap chase under Jason and rewarded his owner Dermot Hanafin, winning by more than 30 lengths.

3rd December 2011

Another great Saturday was had by all at Aintree today with a winner and two seconds. The winner being Cinders and Ashes, ridden by Jason Maguire, who beat his old rival Keys in emphatic fashion. The victory was particularly sweet as he had been unlucky not to have won at Ascot on his first run over hurdles when he slipped badly yet still got up to be a close second. After those two runs it looks like all roads will lead to Cheltenham in the spring. Mentions must also be given to both Reindeer Dipping and Red Rocco who went down all guns blazing and finishing second. Perfect examples of 'tough, game McCain horses'.

The day got even better when Tiger Maguire ridden by Adrian Lane won his bumper at Chepstow giving us an across the card double. Many congratulations to winning owners, The Merseyclyde Partnership, Dermot Hanafin and Phil Cunningham.

Both were ridden by Jason and congratulations go out to their owner's Trevor Hemmings, Mr Allen and Mr Brilley.

28th November 2011
The long trip to Ffos Las was made worthwhile today when Hollow Tree won the first by 12 lengths ridden by Jason. Well done to Messrs Brannon, Dennis, Dick and Holden who own Hollow Tree. This was followed swiftly by Mr Chippy who made it two out of two on the day, Mr Chippy having his first run from the yard and seeming to relish the conditions. Congratulations to his owner, Philip Holden and Jason for riding a double.

27th November 2011
Another winner today at Carlisle, this time courtesy of Nowurhurlin who was ridden by John Kington. He did it well and has improved race by race. Congratulations to his owner's 'The Ground Hurlers' and here's hoping for still further improvements.

A great day was had by all and many congratulations go to owners Roger O'Byrne and Tim Leslie. In all it was a treble on the day and took the seasons total to over 60 winners.
Overturn wins his second Graded race in a week. This time it was a Grade 1, The Stanjames.com Fighting Fifth at Newcastle. He is believed to be the first horse to win both the Northumberland Plate and the Fighting Fifth. It goes without saying he is a very special horse and we are very lucky to have him in the yard. Many congratulations to Jason Maguire and owner Tim Leslie who both had a double on the day.

25th November 2011

18th April 2011

ONE HUNDRED WINNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The century was reached today - what a season!  Thanks to a great team , great teamwork, great owners and  some super horses. Well done everybody.

Todays 'superhorse' was Ballabrook, ridden by Jason and owned by a great friend Ray Pattison - who owned horses with Donald Senior, many years ago, when Donald Junior was knee high to the proverbial grasshopper!

17th April 2011
The Century is within our grasp with a double today bringing the season's total to 99!  Riptide won his first race over fences given (without doubt) a brilliant ride by Jason and Red Merlin made it a double (in a far easier fashion) again ridden by Jason.  Many congratulations to owner's, Gone to the Bar Racing and The Timeform Betfair Racing Club and M Taylor.

14th April 2011
Bahira won nicely at Sedgefield today under Jason, giving her owners  'Blue Bell Bud' their first winner and continuing to show great promise.

9th April 2011

'WE WON THE NATIONAL !' The day didn't start too well with our gallant Peddlers Cross getting beat.  Sadly he 'ran flat' and although he had been in good form at home it was obvious once he got racing again that Cheltenham had taken it's toll.  Peddlers is now going to have a good summer holiday and will hopefully come back fighting.

Although very down hearted after Peddler's race, we all had great hopes for Ballabriggs in the National.  However, being the National, they were purely hopes!  Ballabriggs looked stunning in the parade ring and even more stunning during the race.  Never further back than about fifth and after leading for virtually all the second circuit, he came home in front and put far more than just a smile on everybodies faces.

Although tired after his exertions after plenty of water, he was soon acting the fool in 'the dope box' and playing/rolling in the shavings whilst everyone waited for him to produce the necessary goods!

Thank you for all the support and congratulations over the past couple of days, it has been absolutely magic and we are all very proud of our special horse 'Brigsy' and of course his special jockey Jason.

Our congratulations and thanks go to Mr Hemmings for entrusting us with such a fantastic horse.

The day got even better when Super Duty won first time out in a 'bumper' at Bangor ridden by John Kington.  This brought the season's total to 96 and that century is definitely in sight!

Red Merlin was a fairly impressive winner at Doncaster today, ridden by Henry Brooke.  Congratulations to The Timeform Betfair Racing Club and Mr Taylor.

3rd March 2011

Another good day today even without any winners.  Firstly Jason's ban was reduced enabling him to partner Peddler's Cross in the Champion Hurdle and very rightly so.

Secondly we heard that Jon and Louise Glews are now the parents of identical twin boys Harry and James. Jon is a big supporter of the yard, his company Proactive Personnel is the yard sponsor and more importantly both him and Louise are good friends.  Congratulations to you both, big well done to Lou who (as usual) did all the hard work and we look forward to welcoming Harry and James up the gallops on a Saturday morning!

2nd March 2011
Another great day at our local track Bangor on Dee ended with a double and two seconds.  Pie at Midnight won his second race in a row by making all ridden by Jason and Jackson's Cage won the bumper ridden by Henry Brooke. 26th February 2011
Another day and another double, this time at Newcastle, bringing the seasons tally so far to 81! The first leg came from the diminutive Reindeer Dippin (who was according to Sian born with wellies on!) ridden by Henry Brooke and the second leg from Chamirey who was ridden by Timmy Murphy and made it all look very easy dispite the conditions. Many congratulations to The Sandgrounders and Sir Robert Ogden.

I think it fair to say that there were a lot of sombre faces around the yard this morning after Jason's ban yesterday and a general air of utter disbelief. It goes without saying that the whole McCain team are behind Jason and are hoping that he will be in the right place on the first day of the festival and that is on board Peddler's.

It must also be mentioned that Cool Mission is unmarked, ate all his tea last night and spent the day bouncing around his paddock, oblivious to all the fuss - in fact there were no marks when he got off the wagon last night!

22nd February 2011
Ebanour made a winning debut at Wetherby today ridden by Jason Maguire and is looking like an exciting recruit to the McCain team.  Congratulations to owner Tim Leslie.

It was smiles all round and a job well done at Kelso today when Peddler's Cross made his belated reappearance and completed his task well.  All roads now lead to the Champion Hurdle and fingers crossed for an uninterupted run up to the big day. A special well done to all involved particularly Adrian who rides him out every day and Rooney who looks after him and not forgetting Jason who must have really felt the pressure today.  Congratulations of course go to his owner Tim Leslie. Heres hoping he is still unbeaten on Wednesday March 16th!

12th February 2011

A loveley win from one of the yard's characters today - Reindeer Dippin, ridden by Brian Harding up at Ayr. The Reindeer - you might have noticed, still has a furry head as he objects to the clippers and also some mornings frustratingly having his bridle put on!  However, it doesn't stop him and we all love him. A big well done goes to his owners 'The Sandgrounders'.

All at McCains would like to offer our condolences to the connections of the horses lost at Newbury today: Fenix Two and Marching Song.
